Quantifying microbial control of soil organic matter dynamics at macrosystem scales

Summary: The amount, decomposition, and persistence of soil organic matter (SOM) are mainly controlled locally but shaped by interactions at multiple spatiotemporal scales to form macrosystem patterns. These controls on SOM turnover, including selection and assembly of soil decomposer communities, have functional effects on SOM dynamics across macrosystems. Further research and empirical practices are needed to understand these microbial controls on SOM and improve carbon cycle projections for climate policies.

Summary: This study measured the Q(10) of soil extracellular enzyme activity in Chinese grasslands at different depths and elevations, finding that the Q(10) of LAP was higher than that of BG and AP, and varied with elevation. The study improved understanding of the vertical pattern of Q(10) in water-limited ecosystems.
