Drought effects on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics in global natural ecosystems

Lei Deng et al.

Summary: Extreme droughts can have serious impacts on the pools, fluxes, and processes of terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycles. This study found that drought leads to a decrease in soil organic carbon content, an increase in mineral nitrogen content, and a decrease in nitrogen mineralization and nitrification rates. The effects of drought on soil C and N cycles are regulated by ecosystem type, drought duration, and intensity.

Simulated climate change and seasonal drought increase carbon and phosphorus demand in Mediterranean forest soils

D. Asensio et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of understanding soil biogeochemical responses to increasing drought in the coming decades. It shows that both seasonal and experimental drought conditions can lead to changes in soil enzyme activities and resource availability, with a higher relative demand for phosphorus than carbon and nitrogen observed in soil microbial communities. The results suggest that prolonged drought may decrease soil organic matter decomposition and nutrient release, which could negatively impact plant and microbial nutrition.
