Soil carbon and nitrogen of wheat-maize rotation system under continuous straw and plastic mulch

Yajin Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that straw mulching can enhance soil organic carbon and nitrogen content, increase microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and ultimately improve crop yield and reduce nitrate nitrogen leaching during wheat-maize rotation in Northwest China.

Microbial metabolism and necromass mediated fertilization effect on soil organic carbon after long-term community incubation in different climates

Haowei Ni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fertilization effect on soil organic carbon (SOC) and the role of soil microorganisms in warm climates after long-term community incubation. Results showed that fertilization led to a less reduction of SOC and affected the microbial activity and carbon storage. Additionally, fertilization significantly increased microbial necromass, contributing to soil resistant carbon in the long-term.

Large-scale farmer-led experiment demonstrates positive impact of cover crops on multiple soil health indicators

Stephen A. Wood et al.

Summary: The study found that cover crops had small but increasing impacts on soil health indicators over 5 years, with active carbon concentration responding most rapidly. Soil texture, trial duration, and farm-level random effect were also strongly related to soil health properties. Overall, the results suggest that cover crops can begin to influence soil health within several years after adoption.
