A critical review on cleanroom filtration

Monica Puri Sikka et al.

Summary: Cleanrooms are highly controlled enclosed rooms where air quality is monitored and ensured to have less contamination according to standard cleanliness level. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review of the evolution of cleanroom filter media, evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of air filter media, and study air filters with additional properties.

Athermal sediment creep triggered by porous flow

M. Houssais et al.

Summary: The dynamics of sediment creep under the stress of porous flow remains a relatively unexplored field. Experimental results show that the deformation rate of sediment increases with the control parameters, and a new dimensionless parameter P* allows for a collapse of all deformation results onto a single curve. Two distinct creep regimes are identified, corresponding to a systematic change in mean void size as P* increases.

The contribution of colloidal aggregates to the clogging dynamics at the pore scale

N. Delouche et al.

Summary: The research shows that aggregates are the main building blocks of pore clogging and the average size of aggregates causing blockage increases with flow velocity. Studying the clogging process of different types of monodisperse dispersions under various flow conditions reveals that the formation of clogs appears complex yet systematic.

Impact of pulsating flows on particle deposition in forward osmosis with spacers

Andreas Kastl et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to pulsating flows, the deposition rate of particles can be up to 2.6 times higher in a steady state. As a result, the average deposition decreased by a factor of 3.5 from steady state (109 +/- 67 beads mm(-2)) to pulsating feed flow (31 +/- 17 beads mm(-2)) after 4 hours of deposition. These results provide new fundamental insights into the constraints and advantages of using pulsating flows for fouling mitigation in forward osmosis systems.

Numerical simulation of clogging in a microchannel with planar contraction

Marco Trofa et al.

Summary: Clogging, caused by the complete blockage of channel cross section, interrupts flow in confined geometries and is a critical issue in industrial and biological applications. Numerical simulations may offer insights into the mechanism governing this complex phenomenon.

Squeezing multiple soft particles into a constriction: Transition to clogging

Clement Bielinski et al.

Summary: The study explores the behavior of multiple deformable capsules squeezing into a constriction, focusing on two main states: continuous passage of the particles and clogging due to blockage. The transition between these states is influenced by the ratio of capsule size to constriction width and the deformability of the capsule membrane.

Microplastics through the Lens of Colloid Science

Ahmed Al Harraq et al.

Summary: Microplastics, sub-millimeter-sized fragments of plastics, are a new class of pollutants increasingly found in the environment. Due to their unique physicochemical characteristics, it is challenging to predict their behavior in the environment, making the study of their properties essential for understanding environmental pollution.

Roughness-dependent clogging of particle suspensions flowing into a constriction

Chiao-Peng Hsu et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the clogging of particle suspensions in microchannels is influenced by surface roughness, with rougher particles more likely to jam at the constriction for slower flows. These findings identify surface roughness as an essential parameter to consider in the formulation of particulate suspensions.
