Universal Polymeric-to-Colloidal Transition in Melts of Hairy Nanoparticles

Daniele Parisi et al.

Summary: The study reveals universal dynamic behavior of hairy self-suspended nanoparticles in the melt state, including polymer-grafted nanoparticles and star polymers. Different response regimes are observed, with one characterized by low-frequency solidlike colloidal plateau and ultraslow relaxation, and the other dominated by starlike relaxation of partially interpenetrated arms. Transition between these regimes is marked by a crossover where both polymeric and colloidal modes are discerned.

Projectile Impact Shock-Induced Deformation of One-Component Polymer Nanocomposite Thin Films

Jinho Hyon et al.

Summary: Studies have revealed differences in energy absorption capabilities between PGNs and homopolystyrene, with factors such as film thickness and impact velocity playing a role. Experimentally, it was found that the key factor contributing to higher energy absorption in thinner films is the visco-plastic deformation of molten film around the penetration site. Additionally, the degree and distribution of entanglements between nanoparticles also influence the energy absorption capabilities.

Why Enhanced Subnanosecond Relaxations Are Important for Toughness in Polymer Glasses

Christopher L. Soles et al.

Summary: This study investigates the connection between fast relaxation processes in a polymer glass and mechanical toughness, revealing a change in nanoscale dynamical processes during the brittle-to-ductile transition that leads to increased material toughness. The appearance of anharmonicity on a picosecond time scale is found to coincide with the onset of ductility, highlighting the importance of fast anharmonic molecular motions for energy dissipation. Brillouin light scattering measurements show a concomitant upturn in Poisson's ratio near the brittle-to-ductile transition, indicating a relation between dynamic heterogeneities and yield mechanisms.
