Design, Manufacturing, and Characterization of Thin, Core-Free, Rolled Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

Julian Kunze et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel coreless rolled dielectric elastomer actuator (CORDEA) is developed for use as artificial muscles in soft robotic structures. The concept is based on a silicone film with screen-printed carbon black electrodes, stacked and rolled in a spiral structure using off-the-shelf components. A new manufacturing process focuses on simplicity and reliability, enabling high energy density actuator systems. Experimental evaluation and performance testing with mass load and cycling voltage show promising results.

Modeling and Parameter Identification of Rolled Dielectric Elastomer Actuators for Soft Robots

Summary: Dielectric elastomers have been increasingly used in soft robotics to create high energy density actuators with self-sensing capabilities. A proposed energy-based model for rolled DEs in this study can be applied for control and self-sensing applications. The model is validated through parameter identification based on experimental data.
