Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction to Hydrogen Peroxide: From Homogenous to Heterogenous Electrocatalysis

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This review highlights the recent advancements in homogenous and heterogenous catalysts for electrocatalytic O-2 reduction reaction (ORR) to H2O2, covering the basic principles of ORR and methodology for investigating ORR to H2O2. It discusses H2O2 production over homogenous catalysts and recent breakthroughs with heterogenous catalysts, emphasizing nonnoble metal-based nanomaterials, carbon materials, and single-atom catalysts. Challenges and opportunities for electrochemical ORR to H2O2 are also critically examined in the review.

3d Transition-Metal-Mediated Columbite Nanocatalysts for Decentralized Electrosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that divalent 3d transition metal cations can control the catalytic activity and selectivity of columbite nanoparticles for efficient electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide. The optimal NiNb2O6 catalyst exhibits excellent H2O2 selectivity and Faradaic efficiency in alkaline electrolyte, outperforming other transition metal oxide catalysts. In application demonstrations, NiNb2O6 shows high productivity in producing H2O2 and efficient decomposition of organic dyes, highlighting the great potential of low-cost 3d transition-metal-mediated columbite catalysts.

Mixed Diffusion-Kinetic Control of H2O2 Oxidation at an Oxide-Covered Platinum Electrode in Alkaline Electrolyte: Implications for Oxygen Electroreduction Studies with a Rotating Ring Disk Electrode

Katarzyna Szwabinska et al.

Summary: The oxidation of H2O2 on an oxide-covered Pt ring is controlled by diffusion-kinetic mechanisms, with the ratio of empirical ring current to diffusion-controlled ring current varying with rotation rate. At 1.2 V-RHE, this ratio is 79.9 % at 400 rpm and 61.4 % at 2500 rpm, leading to incorrect diagnosis of the ORR mechanism and overestimation of electron transfer number values. An error elimination procedure based on the Koutecky-Levich method is proposed to address this issue.
