Protein-based nanomaterials and nanosystems for biomedical applications: A review

Shichao Ding et al.

Summary: Protein-based nanomaterials and nanosystems (PNNS) have captured significant scientific interest in recent years due to their potential in bio-applications, with a focus on designing multi-functional PNNS based on different protein characteristics. The latest developments in unique synthesis strategies and detailed classifications of PNNS have been reviewed, highlighting the functions of proteins in biomedical applications such as targeting, carriers, enzymes, and fluorescent indicators. Challenges and future prospects in PNNS research have also been discussed.

Design of biologically active binary protein 2D materials

Ariel J. Ben-Sasson et al.

Summary: By designing rigid interfaces, we have successfully generated binary layers co-assembled by two protein components, and experiments have shown that this material can rapidly form ordered structures in vitro and in cells. This design approach allows for customization and symmetry reconfiguration, enabling the formation of ligand arrays that can drive receptor clustering, downstream protein recruitment, and signaling.

Recent Advances in Fabrication of Well-Organized Protein-Based Nanostructures

Jian-Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: Biomolecule-guided self-assembly is an effective approach for organizing inorganic nanoparticles into predefined nanostructures. Supramolecular proteins, with complex structures and modifiable ligands, are ideal candidates for templating functional nanoparticles. Protein-based assembly allows for precise architectures and highlights the importance of functionalizing protein templates and controlling interactions between nanoparticles and templates. Challenges and future directions in designing complex protein-based materials are also discussed.
