Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived from Calcium and Strontium Complexes of a Redox-Active Ligand

Natalia L. Bazyakina et al.

Summary: The reactions of monomeric calcium and strontium complexes with 4,4'-bipyridyl resulted in compounds containing simultaneously radical-anionic ligands. The structures were determined by X-ray analyses and the presence of unpaired electrons was confirmed by ESR spectroscopy. The DFT calculations confirmed the energetically favorable configurations of the molecules with 4,4'-bipy fragments. The magnetic susceptibility measurements showed the presence of two unpaired electrons per monomeric unit. The thermal stability of the compounds was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, and a novel MOF containing two different paramagnetic bridging ligands was discovered.
