Separation performance of ultrafiltration during the treatment of algae-laden water in the presence of an anionic surfactant

Tingting Zhu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that natural surfactants can enhance the hydrophilicity of algae interface and stability of algae-laden water, reducing algae aggregation. While SDS or LAS aggravated membrane fouling in the initial filtration process, it alleviated fouling later on due to a looser cake layer formation. Surfactants led to more pore blocking in the early stage, resulting in a significant decrease in total flux. Additionally, SDS or LAS reduced disinfection byproduct formation potential by degrading free available chlorine, but increased algal toxins concentration in ultrafiltration effluent, indicating a high impact on separation performance.

Interaction and removal of oxytetracycline with aerobic granular sludge

Qiulai He et al.

Summary: This study compared the tolerance ability of incomplete and complete granulation sludge to oxytetracycline (OTC), finding that incomplete granulation sludge showed better denitrification performance and resistance, while complete granulation sludge suffered a permanent collapse under high OTC concentrations.

Application of UV/chlorine pretreatment for controlling ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling caused by different natural organic fractions

Ying Wan et al.

Summary: The study shows that UV/chlorine pretreatment can effectively mitigate membrane fouling from different NOM fractions. Increasing chlorine dose can further improve the fouling reduction. The reduction of molecular weight of organic compounds and decomposition of unsaturated organic species are the main reasons for alleviating membrane fouling.

Catalytic ozonation of iohexol with α-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH in water: Efficiency, degradation mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Pengwei Yan et al.

Summary: Catalytic ozonation with alpha-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH as the catalyst can significantly enhance the degradation of Iohexol, promoting the removal and mineralization of dissolved organic carbon in water. Additionally, higher concentrations of Iohexol have adverse effects on the survival, hatching, and movement behavior of zebrafish embryos and larvae.

Insights into the simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal process for in situ sludge reduction and potential phosphorus recovery

Qiulai He et al.

Summary: The study showed that an SNDPR system operated in an alternating anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic mode can effectively remove COD, TP, NH4+-N, and TIN, enhance the bioactivity and biomass density of inoculated sludge, and maintain stable amounts of EPS with a stable PN/PS ratio. Additionally, the system exhibited a low observed sludge yield and a maximum anaerobic phosphorus release, providing opportunities for further phosphorus recovery. The SNDPR system not only deserves attention for in situ sludge reduction and potential phosphorus recovery, but also for its reliable and stable wastewater treatment performance.

Evaluation of the effectiveness, safety, and feasibility of 9 potential biocides to disinfect acidic landfill leachate from algae and bacteria

Giulio Farinelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness and environmental impact of 9 biocides as disinfectants against microbiological contaminants in contaminated groundwater. It suggests that hydrogen peroxide, MIT, and metabisulfite are the most promising disinfectants due to their ability to completely inactivate bacteria and remove over 80% of microalgae without generating harmful by-products.

Coupling sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation and coagulation for membrane fouling mitigation in algae-laden water treatment

Xiaoxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: A novel process combining sodium percarbonate oxidation and PACl coagulation was proposed to alleviate algal fouling in membrane water treatment processes. The synergistic effect of coagulation and oxidation enhanced the removal of algal pollutants, leading to improved membrane performance during algae-laden water treatment.
