Predictive Association of Pre-Operative Defect Areas in the Outer Retinal Layers With Visual Acuity in Macular Hole Surgery

Summary: The purpose of this study was to develop methods to model the external limiting membrane (ELM) and ellipsoid zone (EZ) surrounding a macular hole (MH) to determine the association with postoperative defect and visual acuity. Results showed that predicted pre-operative defects in ELM and EZ were associated with actual postoperative defects at 2 months, and BCVA at 12 months was significantly associated with pre-operative modeled area of the defect in ELM, suggesting important prognostic information from ELM virtual flattening.

OCT Signal Enhancement with Deep Learning

Summary: The study successfully improved the signal-to-noise ratio of time-domain OCT images to approach that of spectral-domain OCT images using a generative adversarial network method, with empirical validation in patients with open-angle glaucoma. The results showed that image enhancement significantly enhanced the agreement between time-domain OCT RNFLT measurements and spectral-domain OCT RNFLT measurements, and RNFLT change became a stronger predictor of visual field progression in the treatment arms of the study.
