Elucidating the Quenching Mechanism in Carbon Dot-Metal Interactions-Designing Sensitive and Selective Optical Probes

Farah Noun et al.

Summary: Carbon dots prepared using glutathione and formamide as dual fluorescent metal sensing probes show selective behavior towards Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions, leading to the development of a robust ratiometric sensor with low-ppb detection sensitivity in water. Characterization techniques and acid-base theory reveal insights into the nature of metal-carbon dot interactions, which can be used to tailor properties for targeting specific metal ions and applicable to other fluorescent nanoparticle systems for metal sensing applications.

Flexible four-dimensional optical data storage enabled by single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation in thermoplastic polyurethane

Weiliang Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a flexible four-dimensional optical data storage technique utilizing ultrafast laser-induced fluorophores in thermoplastic polyurethane. Data voxels with multilevel fluorescence signals can be generated and encoded by modulating the pulse energy of a 515 nm laser. The readout accuracy of the encoded multilayer information remains at 92.2% after 50 bending cycles, showing the feasibility of this technology for data recording based on a roll-to-roll method. The generation of fluorophores by only a single femtosecond laser pulse provides the ability to record data beyond 20 MB/s.

Reversible data encryption-decryption using a pH stimuli-responsive hydrogel

Hongjing Wen et al.

Summary: In this work, a reversible data encryption-decryption technique based on a pH-responsive hydrogel is reported, where the pH channel is employed for data manipulation. Encoding of data is achieved by pre-doping the hydrogel with silver ions and directly writing and patterning silver nanodots on the hydrogel platform. The reversible sub-diffraction limit data encryption is accomplished by selectively imposing acid and alkali stimulations, offering a potential solution for optical storage, multiplexed data manipulation, and optical data security.

Universal quenching of common fluorescent probes by water and alcohols

Jimmy Maillard et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that water acts as a classic fluorescence quencher for organic fluorophores, reducing their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime significantly. The fluorescence quenching is found to be more efficient for red-emitting probes and is attributed to high-energy vibrations of the solvent. Understanding this solvent-assisted quenching mechanism could lead to the rational design of brighter fluorescent probes by protecting organic fluorophores from the solvent.
