Low-count whole-body PET with deep learning in a multicenter and externally validated study

Akshay S. Chaudhari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that a deep-learning-based image-quality enhancement algorithm applied to fourfold reduced-count whole-body PET scans maintained diagnostic image quality and diagnostic confidence comparable to standard scans, independent of the underlying PET scanner used. The method generalized well to external validation set of clinical patients from multiple institutions and scanner types, suggesting its potential for dose or exam-duration reduction in PET imaging, increasing safety and lowering costs.

Deep learning-assisted ultra-fast/low-dose whole-body PET/CT imaging

Amirhossein Sanaat et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the performance of synthesizing regular full-dose PET images from fast/low-dose whole-body PET images using deep learning techniques. The results showed that the predicted full-dose images had almost similar performance in terms of lesion detectability, qualitative scores, and quantification bias and variance.

True ultra-low-dose amyloid PET/MRI enhanced with deep learning for clinical interpretation

Kevin T. Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that deep learning methods can enhance PET images from ultra-low injected dose PET/MRI data, showing significant improvement in image quality metrics and high accuracy in clinical diagnosis. The enhanced images were comparable to standard-dose images in terms of regional coefficient of variation, indicating the potential for dose reduction in amyloid imaging.

Impact of PET data driven respiratory motion correction and BSREM reconstruction of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT for differentiating neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and intrapancreatic accessory spleens (IPAS)

Virginia Liberini et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of PET parameters in distinguishing between intrapancreatic accessory spleens and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, with results showing that using BSREM1000 reconstruction and DDG motion correction can more reliably differentiate pNET from accessory spleens/IPAS, where SUVmax parameter demonstrated high accuracy in distinguishing between the two.

Artificial intelligence enables whole-body positron emission tomography scans with minimal radiation exposure

Yan-Ran (Joyce) Wang et al.

Summary: The study utilized a novel artificial intelligence algorithm to generate diagnostic F-18-FDG PET images of pediatric cancer patients from ultra-low-dose input images. The convolutional neural network (CNN) successfully reconstructed standard-dose PET images from simulated ultra-low-dose scans, improving image quality and diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional low-dose scans. The CNN augmentation also led to higher agreement in diagnostic confidence between standard clinical scans and AI-reconstructed PET scans.

Revisiting detection of in-transit metastases in melanoma patients using digital 18F-FDG PET/CT with small-voxel reconstruction

Pierre-Andre Zimmermann et al.

Summary: Digital PET with small-voxel reconstruction provides extra value in detecting in-transit metastases in melanoma patients, reducing indeterminate findings and compensating for false negative scans with former generation PET systems. It is recommended to perform scans encompassing the appropriate upper or lower limbs of the patient.

Scalable electronic readout design for a 100 ps coincidence time resolution TOF-PET system

Shirin Pourashraf et al.

Summary: A scalable detector readout design was developed for a 100 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) time of flight (TOF) PET detector using 'fast-LGSO:Ce' scintillation crystals and SiPMs. Experimental results demonstrated a CTR of 102.03 +/- 1.9 ps achieved with single crystal elements and 113.4 +/- 0.7 ps with crystal arrays. The goal is to create the first TOF-PET system with 100 ps FWHM CTR using the presented readout architecture.

Prospective data-driven respiratory gating of [68Ga]Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT

Jonathan Sigfridsson et al.

Summary: This prospective study evaluated the performance of a data-driven gating software in identifying respiratory signals and compared the outcomes of [Ga-68]Ga-DOTATOC and [F-18]FDG examinations. The study also assessed tracer uptake quantitation and liver lesion detectability in [Ga-68]Ga-DOTATOC examinations. The results showed that the software effectively detected respiratory motion in [Ga-68]Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT, leading to significantly higher SUVmax and SUVmean values and smaller tumour volumes in gated images.

Summary: The study assessed the effects of a new DDG-PET/CT method on PET quantitation and lesion segmentation, finding that compared to baseline PET/CT, PET/ACT, DDG-PET, and DDG-PET/CT had median changes in SUVmax of 20%, 26%, and 66%, respectively. Different correction methods led to changes in lesion volume, LG, centroid-to-centroid distance, and DICE coefficients.
