Detrital zircon provenance of north Gondwana Palaeozoic sandstones from Saudi Arabia

Guido Meinhold et al.

Summary: The study presents a comprehensive detrital zircon U-Pb age dataset from Palaeozoic sandstones of Saudi Arabia, shedding light on the erosion history of the East African Orogen and sediment recycling in northern Gondwana. The zircon age spectra show five main age populations, with some grains likely originating from igneous rocks of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Additionally, detrital zircons with various ages, including Eoarchaean ages, suggest a complex history of sediment sources in the region.

The evolution of the southern Namibian Karoo-aged basins: implications from detrital zircon geochronologic and geochemistry data

J. Zieger et al.

Summary: Detrital U-Pb zircon age dating and grain morphometrics were used to determine provenance and maximum deposition age in the Lower Permian Dwyka and Middle to Upper Permian Ecca groups in southern Namibia. The results show multiple detrital zircon age populations from different geological periods, suggesting a Gondwana-wide recycling system and significant ash fall input during the Permian. Additionally, the study reveals the evolution duration of the Karasburg and Aranos Basins, with the oldest datable unit from the Dwyka Group having a maximum deposition age of approximately 296 Ma.

A detrital zircon test of large-scale terrane displacement along the Arctic margin of North America

Timothy M. Gibson et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology is a common method used to determine the provenance of sedimentary systems. However, the effectiveness of this technique for paleogeographic reconstructions is often complicated by uncertainties. In this study, statistical analysis of detrital zircon data from northern Yukon and Alaska supports a model of continent-scale strike-slip displacement along the Arctic margin of North America. This research highlights the importance of using large detrital zircon datasets within a robust geologic framework for evaluating translations across complex tectonic boundaries.

Revisiting the Intermediate Sediment Repository Concept Applied to the Provenance of Zircon

Manuel Francisco Pereira et al.

Summary: This study revisits the intermediate sediment repository (ISR) concept applied in provenance analysis by comparing detrital zircon populations in Holocene beach sand with potential source rocks. The results suggest that the zircon age groups of Carboniferous, Triassic, and Pliocene-Pleistocene ISRs are faithfully reproduced in Holocene sand. Additionally, the recycling of a protosource (Cretaceous syenite) in a sedimentary system dominated by ISRs is evaluated.

Fjord network in Namibia: A snapshot into the dynamics of the late Paleozoic glaciation

Pierre Dietrich et al.

Summary: Research has shown that U-shaped valleys in northwestern Namibia from the late Paleozoic ice age represent intact fjord-network morphologies, providing insight into ancient ice dynamics and climate regulation. The preserved glacial morphology in this region allows for reconstruction of past ice thicknesses and glacier dynamics. Fjords likely played a crucial role in both glacier dynamics and organic carbon sequestration during this icehouse period.

Dating detrital zircon from the gold-bearing Ventersdorp Contact Reef in the Ventersdorp Supergroup of South Africa

D. H. Cornell et al.

Summary: The Ventersdorp Contact Reef, part of the Ventersdorp Supergroup, lies at the base of the Witwatersrand Goldfields and is younger than previously thought, as indicated by U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains from VCR conglomerates. The Ventersdorp Supergroup is older than the Vryburg Formation, with potential implications for its chronostratigraphy.

Combining detrital zircon shape and U-Pb-Hf isotope analyses for provenance studies - An example from the Aquiri region, Amazon Craton, Brazil

Armin Zeh et al.

Summary: Provenance studies using in situ U-Pb dating and Hf isotope analyses typically overlook shape parameters of detrital zircon grains despite their potential value in understanding hinterland and detritus transport. This study in the Aquiri region of the eastern Amazon Craton presents a comprehensive data set combining zircon U-Th-Pb-Hf isotope analyses with zircon shape and physical parameters, revealing specific environmental conditions and source information during Neoarchaean deposition of the Cuxiu Formation. Well-preserved euhedral shapes of detrital zircon grains, combined with correlation of zircon roundness with width and consistent values of size and typology parameters across different ages, suggest fast, direct supply from local basement sources and thorough hydrodynamic sorting during transport.
