Spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China

Dongfan Li et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in Northeast China from 1995 to 2015. It found significant temporal and spatial differences in nitrate nitrogen concentrations and potential health risks, indicating worsening nitrogen pollution in groundwater and the need for further attention. The drivers of increased nitrate nitrogen concentrations were attributed to increased fertilizer use and the implementation of a land fertility policy by the local government.

Unraveling influences of nitrogen cycling on arsenic enrichment in groundwater from the Hetao Basin using geochemical and multi-isotopic approaches

Zhipeng Gao et al.

Summary: The origin and co-cycling of nitrogen species in arsenic-prone groundwater remain poorly understood, which could affect arsenic behavior. This study investigated the geochemical and multi-isotopic characteristics of groundwater in different redox environments to reveal the effects of nitrogen cycling on arsenic mobility.

Biogeochemical transformation processes of iron, manganese, ammonium under coexisting conditions in groundwater based on experimental data

Rui Zuo et al.

Summary: In a dynamic column experiment using aquifer medium from a riverbank filtration (RBF) site in Northeast China, key biogeochemical processes such as biochemical oxidation, reductive dissolution, and adsorption were identified in the transformation of Fe2+, Mn2+, and NH4+ under coexisting conditions in real groundwater. Microbial analysis revealed dominant genera related to iron-oxidizing bacteria (IOB), manganese-oxidizing bacteria (MnOB), and nitrifying bacteria, with their spatial distribution influencing the biotransformation processes. Microbial activity influenced the transformation intensity by changing the chemical environment, with the generated iron and manganese oxides contributing significantly to the transformation of contaminants.

Long-term redox conditions in a landfill-leachate-contaminated groundwater

Daniel Abiriga et al.

Summary: The study analyzed redox conditions in groundwater contaminated by leachate from Revdalen Landfill over a 24-year period, finding elevated levels of certain parameters exceeding Norwegian drinking water norms while others showed strong attenuation along the groundwater flow path. Oxygen, nitrate, and sulphate increased farther out in the plume, and the redox conditions shifted as the landfill ecosystem transitioned from reducing to aerobic conditions.

Degradation of ciprofloxacin by the Mn cycle system (MnCS): Construction, characterization and bacterial analysis

Yanan Cai et al.

Summary: A novel method similar to the geo-cycle of Mn on Earth was proposed in this paper to regenerate MnO2. The MnCS showed feasibility in the coexistence of substances and provided kinetic degradation. The physicochemical characteristics of MnO2 before and after regeneration were characterized, revealing changes in morphology and composition during the process.

Salinity-induced fluorescent dissolved organic matter influence co-contamination, quality and risk to human health of tube well water, southeast coastal Bangladesh

Mohammad Mahbub Kabir et al.

Summary: Salinity in coastal Bangladesh's drinking water poses a severe crisis in socio-economic, environmental, and human health safety. The study analyzed tube well water samples for trace metals and found that salinity-induced FDOM influences water quality and health risks, especially for children.

A Critical Review on the Multiple Roles of Manganese in Stabilizing and Destabilizing Soil Organic Matter

Hui Li et al.

Summary: Manganese plays a significant role in terrestrial ecosystems by influencing carbon cycling through various pathways, including mediating biochemical processes and oxidation of organic molecules. Current research on the impact of manganese oxides is limited, and there is still a lack of understanding of how manganese regulates litter decomposition pathways in diverse ecosystems.
