Effects of thidiazuron and ethephon on the grain filling and dehydration characteristics of maize in Northeast China

Lijie Li et al.

Summary: A mixture of ethephon and thidiazuron can effectively reduce maize grain moisture content and improve yield and quality of mechanical grain harvesting. The mixture can accelerate leaf senescence and increase the rates of grain, bract, and cob dehydration.

In silico assessment of the potential of basalt amendments to reduce N2O emissions from bioenergy crops

Elena Blanc-Betes et al.

Summary: The study found that large-scale deployment of basalt may help reduce N2O emissions from cultivated soils, which could contribute to climate stabilization. Model simulations indicated that basalt applications could decrease N2O emissions in maize and miscanthus. Additionally, basalt may enhance plant nitrogen uptake and decrease microbial N availability, leading to lower N2O emissions.

Alkali-Hydrothermal Treatment of K-Rich Igneous Rocks for Their Direct Use as Potassic Fertilizers

Aaron Mbissik et al.

Summary: The study explored the potential of K-rich igneous rocks from Morocco as alternative sources of potassium for African countries. Through hydrothermal treatment, these rocks showed a significant increase in the release of essential nutrients such as K, Mg, Ca, Fe, P, and Si, making them suitable candidates for use as potassic fertilizers.

Can arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi speed up carbon sequestration by enhanced weathering?

Erik Verbruggen et al.

Summary: Mitigating climate change and increasing agricultural sustainability are twin challenges society faces in the upcoming decades. Enhanced weathering through ground silicates can reduce atmospheric CO2, with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi potentially playing a key role in this process. Stimulating plant reliance on and investment in these fungi may lead to increased weathering rates and carbon sequestration in agricultural ecosystems.

Summary: The research shows that Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is an effective CO2 removal strategy, especially for acid-impacted forests. Despite logistical carbon penalties during implementation, net CDR can be achieved through increased forest productivity.
