Electrostimulation enhanced ammonium removal during Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) process

Ting-ting Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that microbial electricity coupled with Fe(III) reduction can enhance anaerobic ammonium removal, possibly through the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and the generation of nitrite from the Feammox process. The synergistic effect of BES and Feammox process may improve the reaction process and microorganisms, leading to a more efficient ammonium removal process.

Summary: This study investigated a process of ammonium oxidation under ferric-iron reducing condition (feammox) in a laboratory-scaled system, showing high removal efficiencies for NH4+ and COD under specific conditions. It also revealed that gamma-proteobacteria dominated in the microbial community attached to the system matrix bed.

Using Fe(II)/Fe(III) as catalyst to drive a novel anammox process with no need of anammox bacteria

Yafei Yang et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the occurrence of a novel 'anammox' process in the absence of anammox bacteria, driven by NO-induced Fe(II) oxidation and NH-induced Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) in an anaerobic sludge system. The results showed that Fe(II) was anaerobically oxidized to Fe(III) with the addition of NO2-, leading to significant nitrogen removal. XRD and XPS analysis indicated the production of FeOOH from chemical Fe(II) oxidation with NO2-. Additionally, the isotope experiment confirmed the participation of induced Fe(II) oxidation in Feammox for nitrogen removal.

Reutilize tire in microbial fuel cell for enhancing the nitrogen removal of the anammox process coupled with iron-carbon micro-electrolysis

Fei Xie et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells were used to enhance the nitrogen removal performance of combined anaerobic ammonium oxidation and Fe-C micro-electrolysis systems. The system's effective operation time increased to over 50 days, significantly improving total nitrogen removal efficiency. Enhanced performance was attributed to electron transfer and proton exchange membrane-induced pH decrease, promoting denitrification and aiding in reducing nitrate/nitrite.

Anaerobic Ammonium Removal Pathway Driven by the Fe(II)/Fe(III) Cycle through Intermittent Aeration

Yafei Yang et al.

Summary: The Feammox process, which involves Fe(III) reduction coupled to anaerobic ammonium oxidation, plays a key role in the nitrogen cycle in natural environments. However, the application of Feammox in wastewater treatment is limited by the need for continuous Fe(III) supplementation. This study demonstrated that intermittent aeration with air could facilitate the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle in the Feammox system for continuous nitrogen removal, providing a potential in situ remediation method for treating high-content NH4+.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of nitrogen loss pathways in different layers of paddy soil in southeastern China, revealing differences in the activities of anammox and Feammox in different soil layers. Denitrification was identified as the main nitrogen loss pathway in the surface soil, while Feammox became significant in the 20-40 cm depth.

Freezing Enhances Leaching of Ferrous Ions but Hinders Reductive Dissolution of Ferric Ions from Iron Oxides

Minori Doi et al.

Summary: Iron governs biological activities as an essential element in the natural environment. The concentrations of dissolved iron species are primarily regulated by the solubility of iron minerals, with additional pathways of supply from solids. Redox processes play important roles in the dissolution of iron species from minerals, and freezing can facilitate the leaching of Fe2+ from magnetite while hindering the reduction of ferric ions in oxide crystals.
