Selective removal of Cd(II) ion using synthesised Poly(o-anisidine)-Sn(IV)silicophosphate nanocomposite

Md Dilwar Alam Khan et al.

Summary: A nanocomposite cation exchanger, poly(o-anisidine)-Sn(IV)silicophosphate, was successfully synthesized using the sol-gel method. The nanocomposite showed granulometric nature with uniform surface morphology and good thermal and chemical stability. It exhibited excellent selectivity towards Cd2+ and Th4+ in metal sorption studies, and achieved quantitative binary separations of metal ions with high recovery. The nanocomposite also showed potential in selective removal of hazardous Cd2+ from industrial effluents, making it promising for environmental pollution control and wastewater treatment.

Distribution of antibiotics in water, sediments and biofilm in an urban river (Cordoba, Argentina, LA)

M. Eugenia Valdes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution of antibiotics and metabolite residues in an urban river, revealing the downstream sites as the most polluted due to wastewater treatment plant discharge, with biofilms showing higher accumulation of antibiotics compared to sediments. The presence of specific antibiotics in water poses a high risk for aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of managing identified high-risk antibiotics by government authorities.

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater using microalgae: A review

Sufia Hena et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging micro-pollutants that have harmful effects on living organisms even at low doses. Previous studies have shown their presence in the environment at hazardous levels due to inefficient conventional wastewater treatment plants. Microalgae-mediated treatment offers benefits such as CO2 mitigation during culture and the use of biomass for biodiesel or biofuel production.

Occurrence, seasonal variations, and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in River Ganges at two holy cities of India

Vineet Singh et al.

Summary: The study in the urban stretch of River Ganges in two holy cities in India found the presence of 15 different pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with seasonal variations. The concentrations of PPCPs in the river varied, with higher levels observed in the anthropogenically influenced lower reaches at Haridwar, and overall higher concentrations in winter compared to summer. Various PPCPs showed high detection frequency in the river, with different classes of substances exhibiting different patterns of concentration variation between seasons.

Summary: The study quantified 16 target compounds in the River Yamuna, with caffeine, estrone, gemfibrozil being among the most commonly found. Higher concentrations were detected post-monsoon. Runoff from catchment areas is a contributing factor to the increased concentration of compounds.
