Ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies under influence of climate and land cover change in an afforested semiarid basin, China

Yifan Wu et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of land use and climate change on water-related ecosystem services in the Luanhe River Basin in China. Results show a significant reduction in these services, with climate change having a greater impact on water yield and soil export, while land use change affects nutrient purification more. Differences in these impacts were observed among sub-watersheds in the LRB due to variations in land use types.

Evaluating water resources management scenarios considering the hierarchical structure of decision-makers and ecosystem services-based criteria

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new methodology for evaluating water resources management scenarios, considering various aspects of hydrological ecosystem services. The temporal variations in supplied water and agricultural drought management policies are assessed, along with ecological conditions as a criterion. A game theory-based hierarchical evidential reasoning technique is used for prioritizing and selecting the best water resources management scenario.

Evaluating the resilience of water resources management scenarios using the evidential reasoning approach: The Zarrinehrud river basin experience

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new methodology for quantifying the total resilience of water resources management scenarios, examining the impact of climate change on water supply and demand. Various criteria are defined to measure different aspects of water resources system resilience, and an evidential reasoning-based approach is used to compare management scenarios, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed methodology in the case study of the Zarrinehrud river basin in Iran.

Evaluating the long-term resilience of water resources systems: Application of a generalized grade-based combination approach

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new methodology to evaluate the resilience of water resource systems under extreme events, including three main steps: calculating performance criteria, proposing a new resilience-based criterion, and defining adaptive management scenarios. The methodology has been applied to the Zarrinehrud river basin, showing that traditional criteria may not accurately assess system resilience under extreme events, while new criteria can improve long-term resilience.

Understanding cultural ecosystem services related to farmlands: Expert survey in Europe

Agnes Balazsi et al.

Summary: Cultural ecosystem services (CES) are nonmaterial benefits obtained from ecosystems, covering a wide range of domains. European agricultural landscapes are complex social-ecological systems where synergies and trade-offs between production and conservation determine CES values. Experts believe that interdisciplinary approaches and integrative science-policy methodologies are promising to improve CES approach for policy and management, but practical implementation in policies targeting agricultural landscapes still lags behind.
