Sustainability of rice-based livelihoods in the upper floodplains of Vietnamese Mekong Delta: Prospects and challenges

Dung Duc Tran et al.

Summary: The study points out that the Vietnamese government has started to focus on the long-term sustainability of agriculture, proposing new development directions, but in practice, this shift may be influenced by some farmers' concerns about their traditional planting system and livelihood security.

Effects of riverbed incision on the hydrology of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

Doan Van Binh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that while the dry season discharge of the Tien River increased, the water level decreased, mainly due to accelerated riverbed incision upstream, which could be a key factor causing enhanced salinity intrusion.

Research on fast natural aerial image mosaic

Ting Rui et al.

Summary: This research focuses on UAV image mosaic to generate high-quality panoramic images rapidly without distortions or ghosting. By constructing a RSIFT operator and utilizing the AANAP algorithm, the proposed method achieves improved feature extraction speed by at least 78% compared to SIFT, effectively eliminating motion ghosting. The experimental results demonstrate fast and high-quality mosaic images.

Intensifying saline water intrusion and drought in the Mekong Delta: From physical evidence to policy outlooks

Ho Huu Loc et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the intensified saline water intrusion and drought in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, attributing the causes to riverbed incision, sea level rise, and land subsidence. Through analysis of hydrological time series, it was found that tidal amplification significantly increased, validating the impact of riverbed incision on backwater effects in the delta.

An enhanced analytical framework of participatory GIS for ecosystem services assessment applied to a Ramsar wetland site in the Vietnam Mekong Delta

Ho Huu Loc et al.

Summary: This study enhances the PPGIS analytical framework by introducing a cost-effective data collection strategy and more meaningful statistical methods, resulting in spatial analyses of different ecosystem services across the landscape. The spatial synergies revealed can contribute to sustainable management of protected areas worldwide.

Socio-geographical evaluation of ecosystem services in an ecotourism destination: PGIS application in Tram Chim National Park, Vietnam

Jie Ying Yee et al.

Summary: This paper presents a methodological framework utilizing ES-based social landscape metrics to address barriers in managing ecotourism-integrated national parks, using a case study in Vietnam. The study reveals differences in perception and appreciation of intangible values between tourists and locals in the park, as well as spatial correlations between different categories of Ecosystem Services and land covers. Opportunities for expanding ecotourism activities based on spatial analysis are highlighted, with a call for future research in socio-geographical assessments of ES, especially in ecotourism fields.

Shrinking Tonle Sap and the recent intensification of sand mining in the Cambodian Mekong River

Wen Xin Ng et al.

Summary: The study reveals that extensive riverbed mining has negative impacts on the water level and volume of Tonle Sap Lake, with the erosion in Phnom Penh affecting the water levels in the Mekong more than basin-scale climatic factors. The water level of Tonle Sap is mainly controlled by Tonle Sap River and the Mekong, with declining levels due to sand mining in Phnom Penh leading to the lake's shrinking. The study also highlights the increasing intensity of riverbed mining, particularly in Phnom Penh, and the potential consequences of Tonle Sap's shrinking for the region.

The inefficiency of Vietnamese prawn-rice rotational crops: a slacks-based data envelopment analysis

Thi Anh Ngoc Pham et al.

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the technical inefficiency of Vietnamese prawn-rice rotational crops (PRRC) and the impacts of socio-economic characteristics on this inefficiency. The study used a Russell-type directional distance function to estimate input- and output-specific technical inefficiency and applied bootstrap truncated regression to analyze influencing factors. Results showed that PRRC farmers could reduce input usage while increasing revenue, with experienced farmers and those in Kien Giang province being more efficient.
