Bacterial community variations with salinity in the saltwater-intruded estuarine aquifer

Xiaoying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the responses of bacterial populations in a coastal Holocene groundwater system to salinity and other environmental factors (EFs), finding that bacterial diversity is independent of salinity, while no significant increase or decrease in abundant bacterial relative abundance is observed with salinity changes. However, rare taxa exhibit growth with salinity, correlating significantly with sulfate concentration. The study suggests that the spatial organization of microbial communities is complex and influenced by multiple factors on a regional scale.
