The abundance and characteristics of microplastics in surface water in the transboundary Ganges River

Imogen E. Napper et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abundance, characteristics, and temporal variation of microplastics in the Ganges river, finding that concentrations varied by season and location, with majority being fibers. The research also estimated the daily release of microplastics from the Ganges into the Bay of Bengal.

Characteristics and removal efficiency of microplastics in sewage treatment plant of Xi'an City, northwest China

Zeyuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the transportation, characteristics and fate of MPs in both sewage and sludge of WWTP in Xi'an, a western region of China. The results showed that the abundance of MPs decreased from the influent to the effluent, with the best removal effect in the secondary treatment. The distribution of MPs with different characteristics constantly changed with the treatment process, leading to differences in the distribution of MPs in sludge and sewage.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Microplastics as an emerging threat to the freshwater ecosystems of Veeranam lake in south India: A multidimensional approach

Manikanda K. Bharath et al.

Summary: This study investigated the quality and quantity of microplastic contaminants in water and soil samples at Veeranam lake in Tamil Nadu, India, revealing a variety of microplastic particles such as nylon and polyethylene. The distribution of different types of plastic particles in water and sediment samples was also examined, with nylon, polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and PVC being the most prominent polymers found.

First evidence of microplastic contamination in the freshwater of Lake Guaiba, Porto Alegre, Brazil

Crislaine Bertoldi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination of microplastics in Lake Guaiba in southern Brazil and found widespread pollution of the lake with plastic particles. Fragment type was the most common morphology of microplastics, with white/transparent and red being the predominant colors. Additionally, the research indicated that the distribution of microplastics is strongly influenced by the geohydrological characteristics of the lake, emphasizing the need for improved waste management regulations to reduce microplastic pollution in freshwater systems.

The occurrence and abundance of microplastics in surface water and sediment of the West River downstream, in the south of China

Daofen Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in the downstream area of West River, revealing differences in microplastic abundance in different land use areas. Microplastics were mainly small in size and fiber-form, with polypropylene, polyethylene, and other polymer types identified as prominent.
