Innovative encapsulated self-forming dynamic bio-membrane bioreactor (ESFDMBR) for efficient wastewater treatment and fouling control

Fabiano Castrogiovanni et al.

Summary: A novel concept of a self-forming dynamic bio-membrane for innovative wastewater treatment in a membrane bioreactor is presented in this study. The ESFDM bioreactor showed comparable COD concentration reductions to a conventional MBR but achieved higher reductions in nitrogen-containing nutrients and lower fouling rates. The microbial community structure in the ESFDM promoted bacterial growth and exhibited higher total cell count and diversity compared to the mixed liquor.

Enhancing volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge by a novel cation-exchange resin assistant strategy

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel strategy for enhancing volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge using cation-exchange resin assistant anaerobic fermentation. The proposed process conditions achieved significant sludge disintegration and volatile fatty acids yield. The reusability tests showed that NaCl solution was the best for cation-exchange resin regeneration, with the regenerated resin performing comparably to the original resin.

Self-forming dynamic membrane bioreactor for textile industry wastewater treatment

Adem Yurtsever et al.

Summary: The study investigated the robustness of AnDMBR for synthetic textile wastewater treatment, finding that in the absence of sulfate addition, the removal rate of total COD and filtered COD was 91% and 93% respectively, but decreased to 79% after sulfate addition. The suspended solids concentration in textile wastewater was low, while the dye removal rate was high.

Biochar and GAC intensify anaerobic phenol degradation via distinctive adsorption and conductive properties

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Biochar and granular activated carbon play key roles in enhancing anaerobic phenol degradation by adsorbing dissolved phenol to shorten lag times and facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer. Biochar has a higher electron exchange capacity, which enables more efficient promotion of DIET and electron transfer.

Long-term performance evaluation of granular activated carbon fluidization and biogas sparging in anaerobic fluidized bed membrane bioreactor: Membrane fouling and micropollutant removal

Lee Jiwoo et al.

Summary: This study compared the fluidization of granular activated carbon in an AFMBR and the biogas sparging from the bottom of a G-AnMBR for treating low-strength wastewater. The results showed that AFMBR achieved high organic removal efficiency, methane production, and removal of organic micropollutants, while G-AnMBR had lower efficiency but lower energy consumption.

A review on membrane fouling control in anaerobic membrane bioreactors by adding performance enhancers

Weonjung Sohn et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) combine anaerobic digestion with membrane technology, offering advantages such as biogas production and potential energy use. However, membrane fouling is a persistent issue that can be mitigated by using fouling reduction enhancers like adsorbents and flocculants. Activated carbon and other enhancers have been applied to AnMBRs to control fouling and promote flocculation and coagulation. This review discusses the impacts and mechanisms of different fouling reduction enhancers in AnMBRs.

New insight into the membrane fouling of anaerobic membrane bioreactors treating sewage: Physicochemical and biological characterization of cake and gel layers

Zhen Lei et al.

Summary: The study compared the cake and gel layers in AnMBRs, finding that both layers contribute similarly to membrane fouling. The gel layer has higher specific foulant resistance and is influenced more by biofouling than the cake layer.

Effects of inorganic particles and their interactions with biofilms on dynamic membrane structure and long-term filtration performance

Lugao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study showed that pure biofilms are ideal materials for DMBRs, while the presence of inorganic particles of any size can deteriorate filtration performance. Natural clays were found to decrease DM porosity and lead to significant increases in TMP, highlighting the importance of removing inorganic particles from wastewater to achieve long-term stable operation.
