Application of olive mill waste-based biochars in agriculture: Impact on soil properties, enzymatic activities and tomato growth

Summary: The olive oil industry generates large amounts of olive mill solid wastes and olive mill wastewater, which can be converted into biochar through pyrolysis for agricultural use. The biochar amendments at different application doses have significant effects on enzymatic activities in agricultural soil and promote tomato seedling growth. The produced biochars show great potential as biofertilizers in agriculture.

Summary: The unregulated deposition of metal-based nanoparticles in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in agricultural systems, has severely threatened the diversity of beneficial microbial populations such as soil bacteria and fungi. The literature suggests toxic outcomes of nanoparticle-fungi and nanoparticle-bacteria interactions, highlighting the importance of beneficial soil bacteria and fungi for soil fertility and plant growth.

Long term evaluation of a pilot scale multimodal algal bioprocess for treatment of municipal wastewater

Summary: The feasibility and performance of the Multimodal Algal-bacterial Bioprocess (MAB) for municipal wastewater treatment was successfully demonstrated in a pilot-scale system in Corvallis, Oregon. The system showed continuous improvement in treatment parameters over the one-year study period, with high removal efficiencies for nitrogen and phosphorus, particularly in summer. The algal community analysis revealed seasonal variations in species composition, with high biomass productivity observed during summer months. Overall, MAB proved to be an effective and energy-efficient solution for municipal wastewater treatment.
