Integrated eDNA metabarcoding and morphological analyses assess spatio-temporal patterns of airborne fungal spores

Summary: Fungi are important allergens and plant pathogens that can have severe impacts on public health and agriculture. Traditional morphological analysis and eDNA metabarcoding are both useful methods to study airborne fungal diversity and variation, with eDNA metabarcoding showing higher detection efficiency and ability to detect a greater number of genera compared to morphological analysis. Both methods can be complementary to each other in reliably studying fungal diversity across different seasons and locations.

This study surveyed microbes in the near surface atmosphere of a highly populated area around Madrid, finding a stable ecosystem with a core of abundant bacterial genera across space and time, modulated by climatic variations. The microbial communities exhibited clear seasonal patterns driven by environmental factors, contributing to our understanding of long-term changes in human exposure in highly populated urban areas.

Allergic fungal airways disease (AFAD): an under-recognised asthma endotype

Summary: Allergic fungal airways disease is defined based on IgE sensitisation to thermotolerant fungi and evidence of fungal-related lung damage. Treatment should focus on fungi capable of growing in the airways and causing chronic allergenic stimuli. Patients with sensitisation to these fungi are at risk for progressive lung damage and should be monitored closely.

Allergenic fungal spores in the air of urban parks

Summary: Urban green spaces, especially urban parks, are important for cities, but they can also be a significant source of airborne fungal spores. Cladosporium spores were found in high concentrations in all studied parks, impacting the low biodiversity of fungal spores. While concentrations of Alternaria spores were lower, they still pose a risk to allergic individuals. Allergy sufferers should avoid spending long periods in urban parks during July-August when allergenic fungal spores are at their highest concentrations.
