Effect of membrane blocking on attached cultivation of microalgae

Yingying Meng et al.

Summary: Membrane blocking plays a crucial role in nutrients transfer and illumination in attached cultivation of algae, affecting the biomass and nutrients production of algal biofilm. The study found that the algae production is independent of membrane properties, but influenced by the pore size, with larger pores leading to higher productivity. Total lipids content of algae biomass cultivated on membranes with 1.2 μm pore size reaches about 23.74% due to nitrogen starvation and high illumination intensity.

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater using microalgae: A review

Sufia Hena et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging micro-pollutants that have harmful effects on living organisms even at low doses. Previous studies have shown their presence in the environment at hazardous levels due to inefficient conventional wastewater treatment plants. Microalgae-mediated treatment offers benefits such as CO2 mitigation during culture and the use of biomass for biodiesel or biofuel production.

Effect of ferrate pre-oxidation on algae-laden water ultrafiltration: Attenuating membrane fouling and decreasing formation potential of disinfection byproducts

Hai-Yang He et al.

Summary: Ferrate pre-oxidation was found to be effective in enhancing the FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment of algae-laden source water, leading to disruption of algae cells, formation of algae-ferric floc, and degradation of algal extracellular organic matter. This treatment also improved membrane flux, reduced membrane resistance, and removed a significant amount of dissolved organic compounds and total nitrogen compared to conventional FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment.

Preparation and application of BiOBr-Bi2S3 heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI)

Zeqing Long et al.

Summary: In this study, BiOBr-Bi2S3 heterojunctions with high photocatalytic performance for Cr(VI) reduction were successfully prepared, achieving 100% removal of Cr(VI) within 12 minutes. The performance of photo-reduced Cr(VI) by the heterojunctions was significantly higher than that of pure Bi2S3 and BiOBr, suggesting their potential as a novel photocatalytic adsorbent. Additionally, the heterojunctions showed good adsorption efficiency for Cr(III), indicating their bifunctional capability.

Platinum-group elements sorption by living macroalgae under different contamination scenarios

Joao Pinto et al.

Summary: Increasing emissions of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) into marine environments may impact ecosystems services and organisms. Using algae to remove PGE from contaminated systems can provide a sustainable solution. Different algae species show varying efficiency in removing PGE, with U. lactuca performing the best and brown macroalgae being less effective. Palladium was the easiest to remove, while other PGE had lower affinity to macroalgae.
