Changes of soil quality induced by different vegetation restoration in the collapsing gully erosion areas of southern China

Hui Wen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of collapsing gully management restoration on soil quality and function, finding that different vegetation restoration types significantly impacted soil properties. Natural restoration mixed forest (NF) showed the highest soil quality index (SQI) value, followed by replanted arboreal forest (RA) and replanted scrubland (RS), all of which were significantly higher than the SQI value of the erosion area (EA) in the collapsing gully. Vegetation type explained the most substantial proportion of total variability (46.41%), and restoration time showed a positive correlation with SQI.

Spatial patterns in the C:N:P stoichiometry in Qinghai spruce and the soil across the Qilian Mountains, China

Jianguo Liu et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Qilian Mountains revealed distinct patterns of soil and plant tissue stoichiometry in Qinghai spruce forests, with soil properties playing a larger role in determining plant tissue N:P ratios than climate factors. This highlights the importance of understanding the nutrient traits in forest ecosystems for future cultivation and management in arid regions.

Influence of tree size, local forest structure, topography, and soil resource availability on plantation growth in Qinghai Province, China

Sha Lin et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 6117 living trees in 64 plots in Qinghai Province and found that tree growth was influenced by tree size, local forest structure, topography, and soil resource availability to different degrees. Intense competition was observed among trees, and tree size was identified as the most important predictor of tree growth.

A comprehensive, locally adapted soil quality indexing under different land uses in a typical watershed of the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Xiaohong Zhao et al.

Summary: Modern human activities have led to indiscriminate exploitation of land resources, resulting in increasingly negative impacts on soil quality, especially in ecologically fragile areas. This study evaluated soil quality in a typical watershed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using a fuzzy mathematical model combined with a soil quality index (SQI), showing the highest SQI values in mountain cropland and the lowest in grassland. Sensitivity analysis revealed that certain soil properties, like alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN) and total nitrogen (TN), were more sensitive in mountain cropland. Stratification ratio calculations indicated that certain soil properties, such as available phosphorus (AP), were more important indicators of the effects of land use changes, explaining the better soil quality in mountain cropland. Overall, this study highlighted the potential for assessing soil quality and stratifications in a region with a sensitive and fragile ecological environment.
