A feasibility study of metabolic phenotyping of dried blood spot specimens in rural Chinese women exposed to household air pollution

Ruey Leng Loo et al.

Summary: Exposure-response studies and policy evaluations of household air pollution are currently limited by expensive and burdensome exposure assessment methods. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using dried blood spot specimens for metabolic phenotyping to detect exposure to HAP with high analytical reproducibility.

Seasonal variation of dicarboxylic acids in PM2.5 in Beijing: Implications for the formation and aging processes of secondary organic aerosols

Qing Yu et al.

Summary: Dicarboxylic acids are highly oxidized components that provide insights into the formation mechanism and aging process of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Seasonal variation patterns and sources were investigated based on PM2.5 samples collected in downtown Beijing in 2017, revealing higher concentrations of organic acids in January and strong photochemical formation in July. Gas-phase photooxidation significantly contributed to the formation of these organic acids throughout the sampling period, while the aqueous-phase process played a crucial role in severe haze events in January.

Summary: The Lake Michigan Ozone Study conducted in 2017 aimed to understand the sources contributing to ozone and fine particles along the Lake Michigan coast. The study found that different weather patterns during high ozone periods affected the regional characteristics of PM2.5. The research also highlighted the importance of anthropogenic sulfate emissions and aerosol acidity on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation.

Characterization of nitroaromatic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter from Beijing

Zhiheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study collected PM2.5 samples in Beijing and characterized atmospheric NACs for the first time using LC-Orbitrap MS technology, identifying and quantifying 165 out of 190 NACs, as well as nitro-polyaromatic compounds. Nitrophenols and nitrocatechols were the most abundant NACs species, accounting for 31% and 32% of total NACs, respectively. The study also found that NACs had a significant contribution to organic matter and PM2.5 in winter, with major sources identified as coal combustion, biomass combustion, dust, and transportation.

Summary: This study analyzed organic aerosol (OA) in PM2.5 samples from three cities in China, revealing significant differences in the chemical characteristics of organic compounds between cities. Samples from Changchun had higher levels of polyaromatics, while samples from Shanghai and Guangzhou showed higher levels of oxidation processes in organic compounds. Sulfur-containing compounds were mainly aliphatic with low degrees of unsaturation and aromaticity in all cities.

Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosols in Shanghai, China: seasonal and interannual variability, origin, and formation mechanisms

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: Organosulfates (OSs) are important tracers for secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) and were comprehensively characterized in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples collected in Shanghai in 2015-2016 and 2018-2019. The study found that while the concentration of organic aerosols (OAs) decreased in 2018-2019 compared to 2015-2016, the concentrations of quantified OSs remained similar, suggesting an increased contribution of SOAs to OAs in 2018-2019.
