Microplastics in fish meal: Contamination level analyzed by polymer type, including polyester (PET), polyolefins, and polystyrene

Valter Castelvetro et al.

Summary: Fish meal is a high protein feedstuff obtained from wild-caught fish, which may be contaminated with microplastics from the marine environment. Analytical tools for quantifying this contamination are currently unavailable, but a newly developed procedure allows for quantification of different synthetic polymers in fish meal.

Microplastics in fish and fishmeal: an emerging environmental challenge?

Summary: Microplastics are emerging contaminants that are ingested by marine biota. Studies have shown that whitefish fishmeal samples contain a high number of microplastic particles, with processed fishmeal having higher concentrations than captured fish.

Replacement of fish meal by enzyme-treated soybean on the growth performance, intestine microflora, immune responses and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Yu Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of replacing dietary fish meal with enzyme-treated soybean (ETS) on the growth performance, intestine microflora, immune response and disease resistance of white shrimp. Results showed no significant impact on the survival rate and specific growth rate of shrimp, but the feed conversion ratio increased significantly with higher replacement levels. The levels of total anti-oxidative capacity and malondialdehyde in serum increased with replacement levels, while the activity of lysozyme in serum also increased with replacement levels from 8% to 40%.

Effect of dietary replacement of fish meal protein with crawfish shell meal (Procambarus clarkii) on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity and anti-oxidative capacity of Oujiang color common carp (Cyprinus carpio var. color)

Xiao-Fei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of dietary crawfish shell meal on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, and anti-oxidative capacity of Oujiang color common carp. Results showed that replacing fish meal with crawfish shell meal led to improved weight gain rate and increased enzyme activities in the fish. There were no significant negative effects on growth performance, muscle composition, or serum biochemistry, indicating that crawfish shell meal may be a viable alternative protein source to reduce fish meal demand.
