Valorization of disposable COVID-19 mask through the thermo-chemical process

Sungyup Jung et al.

Summary: Wearing disposable face masks to protect against COVID-19 has become common during the pandemic, but the massive generation of contaminated masks is causing environmental concerns due to the release of toxic chemicals during disposal processes. A CO2-assisted thermo-chemical process is suggested as an environmentally friendly disposal method, simultaneously producing valuable fuels from the masks. The study focused on determining the major chemical constituents of disposable masks and employing pyrolysis to produce syngas and C1-2 hydrocarbons, showcasing a potential for environmentally benign removal of COVID-19 plastic waste.

Is incineration the terminator of plastics and microplastics?

Zhan Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that a significant amount of microplastics exist in bottom ash generated from incineration, with each metric ton of waste producing a considerable number of microplastic particles. Polypropylene and polystyrene were identified as the predominant types, and microplastics exhibited various forms with abundance influenced by factors such as waste separation, GDP per capita, and furnace types.

Characterization and Use of Char Produced from Pyrolysis of Post-Consumer Mixed Plastic Waste

M. A. Martin-Lara et al.

Summary: In this study, the pyrolysis of post-consumer mixed plastic waste was conducted to produce solid products used as adsorbents for lead in aqueous media. The results show that pyrolysis temperature affects the yield and properties of the solid product, with higher temperatures leading to lower carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content. Higher pyrolysis temperatures also result in increased adsorption capacity, with the solid obtained at 550 degrees C showing the highest value at 7.91 mg/g. Additionally, the Sips model best reproduces the experimental results of the adsorption process equilibrium study.
