Improve forest restoration initiatives to meet Sustainable Development Goal 15

Junze Zhang et al.

Summary: Monoculture plantations are not effectively restoring biodiversity. To improve forest restoration policies, more innovative incentive policies are needed to focus on enhancing biodiversity rather than just increasing forest area.

Quantifying influences of anthropogenic-natural factors on ecological land evolution in mega-urban agglomeration: A case study of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater Bay area

Rundong Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that ecological land shifted from decline and fragmentation to growth and integration over the period from 1990 to 2019. Population density and land urbanization rate were identified as the main controlling factors for ecological land evolution, with interactions between driving factors being bivariate. Anthropogenic factors had a greater influence on ecological land than natural factors, with the impact of population density and GDP per capita steadily increasing. Additionally, the effect of average annual temperature and precipitation declined due to the intensification of anthropogenic activities.

Factors of ecosystem service values in a fast-developing region in China: Insights from the joint impacts of human activities and natural conditions

Zhitao Liu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis on the spatiotemporal variation of ecosystem service value (ESV) and the combined effects of influencing factors in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 2000 to 2015. The total ESV in the GBA decreased, with regulating service suffering the most damage and a spatial distribution of ESV showing an outer high and inner low circle structure. Different combinations of factors had varying impacts on ecosystem services, with findings providing new insights on the influencing mechanisms of ESV.

Assessing deeper levels of participation in nature-based solutions in urban landscapes-A literature review of real-world cases

Nikolett Puskas et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing environmental and societal challenges in urban landscapes, emphasizing the need for wider and deeper community participation. There is evidence supporting deeper levels of participation beyond consultation and partnership, with landscape architects and urban planners playing a facilitative role. Practical insights and tools for facilitating participation are provided, with suggestions for future empirical research pathways.
