Model predicted N2O production from membrane-aerated biofilm reactor is greatly affected by biofilm property settings

Xueming Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of key biofilm property settings on N2O production in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) performing autotrophic deammonification. The study found that biofilm thickness/compactness, diffusivity of soluble components in the biofilm structure, and biofilm discretization significantly influenced simulated N2O production, while boundary layer thickness played a marginal role. Distinct upper and lower bounds of N2O production could be predicted within the studied ranges of biofilm property settings.

Summary: In MABR systems, ammonia removal rate is influenced by factors such as ammonia loading rate, oxygen supply, and pH. Maintaining proper biofilm thickness and sufficient mixing conditions are essential for promoting denitrification and nitrification in the system.

Summary: This study confirms the efficacy of MABR systems for treating nitrogen-dominant, space-based wastewater. Despite low nitrification and denitrification efficiencies, the MABR showed unexpectedly high performance under low liquid velocities and relatively high dissolved oxygen levels.
