A synthesis framework using machine learning and spatial bivariate analysis to identify drivers and hotspots of heavy metal pollution of agricultural soils

Shiyan Yang et al.

Summary: This study established a comprehensive pollution control framework for agricultural soils in an industrialized part of Zhejiang Province, China, focusing on a suite of heavy metals identified as priorities for pollution control. It found the key role of industrial and traffic activities in heavy metal accumulation, and identified specific influencing factors for different metals, providing a basis for improved accuracy in source apportionment.

Substantial nitrogen oxides emission reduction from China due to COVID-19 and its impact on surface ozone and aerosol pollution

Qianqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that lockdown measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic in China had a significant impact on NOx emissions and surface PM2.5 and ozone, particularly in the eastern region. The reduction in NOx emissions led to an increase in ozone but a decrease in PM2.5, highlighting the need to consider these complex interactions in emission control strategies.

TROPOMI NO2 in the United States: A Detailed Look at the Annual Averages, Weekly Cycles, Effects of Temperature, and Correlation With Surface NO2 Concentrations

Daniel L. Goldberg et al.

Summary: This study explores the capabilities of the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) in observing the spatial and temporal patterns of NO2 pollution in the continental United States, revealing its ability to differentiate sources in urban and rural areas, variations between weekdays and weekends, and correlations with temperature. The study also demonstrates a strong correlation between TROPOMI NO2 satellite data and surface-level concentrations, making it advantageous for policymakers and public health officials needing high-resolution and timely information for regulatory purposes.

Identifying hotspots based on high-resolution emission inventory of volatile organic compounds: A case study in China

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anthropogenic VOCs emissions in Huai'an City in 2017 and estimated the contributions of different VOC species to ozone formation. The results showed that industrial processes and solvent use were the main sources of VOCs emissions, accounting for 41% and 32% of the total emissions, respectively. The high emissions were spatially located in the areas with intensive industrial activities, highlighting the importance of considering VOC species and their effects on ozone formation in future emission mitigation strategies.
