Towards high-quality biodiesel production from microalgae using original and anaerobically-digested livestock wastewater

Gang Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on the simultaneous treatment of livestock wastewater and high-quality biodiesel production using microalgae technology. Higher microalgal biomass production was observed in the original piggery effluent medium, while microalgae grown in anaerobically-digested effluent had a higher lipid content, which is favorable for biodiesel production. The N/P ratio in the original effluent was closer to the optimal ratio for microalgae growth compared to the anaerobically-digested effluent, indicating potential for sustainable livestock waste management.

Impact of abiotic factors on biodiesel production by microalgae

V. Ananthi et al.

Summary: Biodiesel from microalgae is a promising renewable energy source, but faces challenges in commercialization due to raw material costs and environmental factors affecting production. Lipid extraction from oleaginous microbial cells through cell disruption is crucial for enhancing yield and multiple pretreatment methods are available for this purpose. Optimization of abiotic factors and pretreatment processes in microalgal growth can lead to improved biodiesel production.

Occurrence, fate and removal of microplastics as heavy metal vector in natural wastewater treatment wetland system

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigated a freshwater wetland system in Eastern India and found a high concentration of microplastics and toxic metals in treatment ponds and associated wastewater canals. The presence of microplastics poses a risk to aquatic biota, with potential contamination of fish. The removal efficiency of microplastics in the treatment ponds was estimated to be 53%.

Vermicomposting: A management tool to mitigate solid waste

Fatimah Alshehrei et al.

Summary: Solid waste management in Saudi Arabia is a serious issue due to rapid industrialization, population growth, and urbanization. Recycling and sorting are still in their early stages, while techniques like incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification have high costs. Composting and vermicomposting are seen as economically viable methods, but pollutants like heavy metals pose challenges to biological treatments.
