Removal of selected emerging micropollutants from wastewater treatment plant effluent by advanced non-oxidative treatment - A lab-scale case study from Serbia

Minja Bogunovic et al.

Summary: The presence of 48 emerging micropollutants was tested in influent and effluent from a wastewater treatment plant in Serbia. Different treatments were investigated for the removal of these micropollutants, with some showing high removal efficiencies. Novel natural coagulant showed significant potential compared to conventional coagulant.

Comparison of the new Cl2/O3/UV process with different ozone- and UV-based AOPs for wastewater treatment at pilot scale: Removal of pharmaceuticals and changes in fluorescing organic matter

Massimiliano Sgroi et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficiency of different UV- and ozone-based advanced oxidation processes for removing pharmaceuticals and pollutants from tertiary wastewater effluent. Chlorine-based AOPs were found to be more effective in reducing fluorescence intensities and degrading target micro-pollutants, with the Cl-2/O-3/UV process being the most effective. Unique regression parameters were identified for each compound, surrogate parameter, and oxidation process, showing that a diverse PARAFAC component was the most sensitive surrogate parameter for monitoring small changes in pharmaceutical removal.

Ozonation of 47 organic micropollutants in secondary treated municipal effluents: Direct and indirect kinetic reaction rates and modelling

B. Mathon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of micropollutants in wastewater through ozonation, identifying different removal pathways and rates for various types of organic micropollutants. The research found that low and medium oxidizable micropollutants were mainly removed through indirect pathways, while high oxidizable micropollutants were eliminated through direct pathways. The model developed in the study successfully simulated the removal efficiencies of specific micropollutants in batch experiments and in a full-scale ozonation process.

MBBRs as post-treatment to ozonation: Degradation of transformation products and ozone-resistant micropollutants

Ellen Edefell et al.

Summary: The study found that the biofilm in the pilot MBBR could induce further degradation of certain micropollutants at prolonged exposure times. However, N-oxides formed during ozonation could not be degraded by the biofilm.

Formation of transformation products during ozonation of secondary wastewater effluent and their fate in post-treatment: From laboratory-to full-scale

Rebekka Gulde et al.

Summary: Ozonation is increasingly used for the treatment of micropollutants in water and wastewater, but the fate of transformation products formed during ozonation and their behavior in biological or sorptive post-treatments is still largely unknown. In this study, a high-throughput approach combining laboratory ozonation experiments and LC-HR-MS/MS detection was developed to identify these transformation products for a total of 87 relevant micropollutants. A screening of signals formed in both batch experiments and wastewater treatment plant samples enabled the identification of 84 relevant transformation products, 48 of which had not been reported before. Their fate in different post-treatment steps was also investigated.

Occurrence and removal of emerging pollutants in urban sewage treatment plants using LC-QToF-MS suspect screening and quantification

Laure Wiest et al.

Summary: Urban wastewaters are found to be major vectors of emerging pollutants to aquatic ecosystems, with pharmaceutical residues and pesticides being the main contaminants. The study identified 41 emerging pollutants, with low removal rates observed for more than 50% of the compounds, posing potential ecotoxicological risks to exposed ecosystems.
