Pig carcass-derived biochar caused contradictory effects on arsenic mobilization in a contaminated paddy soil under fluctuating controlled redox conditions

Xing Yang et al.

Summary: Contamination of paddy soils by arsenic is a major concern, and animal-derived biochar can impact the mobilization of As under fluctuating redox conditions. Pig carcass-derived biochar was found to decrease the concentration of dissolved As under oxidizing conditions, but increase it under reducing conditions in contaminated paddy soils.

Unraveling iron speciation on Fe-biochar with distinct arsenic removal mechanisms and depth distributions of As and Fe

Zibo Xu et al.

Summary: Customizing iron speciation in Fe-biochar is crucial for effective arsenic immobilization. Different iron speciations play distinct roles in As removal, with labile/amorphous-C inducing more reductive-Fe(0) formation leading to efficient As immobilization, while stable/graphitic-C generates more amorphous-Fe resulting in high As removal despite limited Fe(0) content. This study provides insights for the design of multifunctional Fe-biochar for environmental remediation.

MOF-derived Co3O4-C@FeOOH as an efficient catalyst for catalytic ozonation of norfloxacin

Hai Chen et al.

Summary: The ZIF-67-derived Co3O4-C@FeOOH composite showed efficient catalytic activity in the ozonation of norfloxacin (NOF), providing more active sites for the reaction and achieving better performance in mineralization. The presence of Fe and Co in various valence states in the catalyst improved the conversion of Co(III)/Co(II) and Fe(III)/Fe(II), enhancing the catalytic activity. Multiple intermediate products were detected, and a possible degradation pathway for NOF was proposed.

Electrocatalytic arsenite oxidation using iron oxyhydroxide polymorphs (α-, β-, and γ-FeOOH) in aqueous bicarbonate solution

Byung Guk Kim et al.

Summary: FeOOH polymorphs, including alpha-, beta-, and gamma-FeOOH, have been synthesized and used for electrocatalytic As(III) oxidation into less toxic As(V) in aqueous bicarbonate solution. Among them, gamma-FeOOH exhibits significantly higher catalytic activity for As(III) oxidation compared to alpha and beta-FeOOH, attributed to large As(III) adsorption, fast charge transfer, and facile generation of hydroxyl radicals.

Pristine and iron-engineered animal- and plant-derived biochars enhanced bacterial abundance and immobilized arsenic and lead in a contaminated soil

He Pan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that iron-engineered biochars were more effective in immobilizing arsenic, while original animal- and plant-derived biochars were better at immobilizing lead in soil. Biochar amendments increased bacterial abundance in soil, potentially alleviating the bio-toxicity of arsenic and lead to soil bacteria.
