Coconut shell ash enhances short-chain fatty acids production from anaerobic algae fermentation

Yun Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to enhance short-chain fatty acids production from anaerobic algae fermentation by using coconut shell ash. Coconut shell ash increased the pH and alkalinity of digestate, promoted solubilization, hydrolysis and acetogenesis processes, and enriched specific microorganisms that contributed to the production of SCFAs. Anaerobic fermentation residue with ash has potential to be used as fertilizer, offering economic and environmental benefits for practical applications.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge using dynamic membrane at varying substrate concentration reveals new insight towards methanogenic pathway and biofilm formation

Roent Dune A. Cayetano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the benefits of biomass retention through dynamic membrane (DM) for stable performance of AnDMBR treating waste activated sludge, with an observed shift in archaeal population and functional gene expression at higher substrate concentrations. The presence of glycosyltransferase encoding genes in the biofilm formation process and the increase in average particle size distribution suggests the potential for high-rate treatment of waste activated sludge using an AnDMBR system.

Mechanistic insights into the effect of poly ferric sulfate on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: Poly ferric sulfate (PFS) has a significant impact on methane production in activated sludge, leading to decreased methane potential and production rate, as well as extended lag time. PFS causes physical enmeshment, disrupts enzyme activity, and inhibits the bioprocess of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis.

An integrated strategy to enhance performance of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Angelica Guerrero Calderon et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new pretreatment method using ferric chloride and nitrite to enhance anaerobic digestion of thickened waste activated sludge, resulting in improved degradability, methane yield, digestate disposal, and phosphorus recovery. The dosing of FeCl3 reduced the pH of the sludge and led to the formation of free nitrous acid, which significantly increased methane production and reduced polymer requirements for further digestate dewatering. Additionally, the dosed Fe(III) precipitated sulfide and phosphorus, decreasing hydrogen sulfide concentration in biogas and increasing vivianite content in digested sludge.
