Seasonal variations in the mass characteristics and optical properties of carbonaceous constituents of PM2.5 in six cities of North China

Lining Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal measurements of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in PM2.5 during autumn and winter in six selected cities in China. The results show that carbonaceous constituents have various adverse impacts on human health, visibility, and climate change, and highlight the need to strengthen pollution control in certain border zones in North China.

Secondary aerosol formation in winter haze over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, China

Dongjie Shang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the severe haze pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region during winter, the mitigation actions taken by the Chinese government since 2013, and the importance of secondary aerosol components during haze episodes. It highlights the need for research on the mechanisms of secondary aerosol formation to effectively control particle pollution in the region.

Li Yang et al.

Summary: This study collected PM2.5 samples in a suburban site in Nanjing, China for a year and analyzed various components. The results showed that the precision of gravimetric mass and dominant species was better than previous studies. The evaporation loss of semi-volatile materials from filters impacted the estimation of certain particulate components.

Source appointment of PM2.5 in Qingdao Port, East of China

Shujun Bie et al.

Summary: Field measurements were conducted near Qingdao Port to characterize particulate air pollutants, assess spatial and seasonal characteristics, and identify contributions from ship traffic emissions. The study found that marine vessel emissions were the dominant contributor to PM2.5 in Qingdao, accounting for 25.05% of the total. The Yellow Sea and Jiaodong Peninsula were identified as the major source regions for PM2.5 in Qingdao, with the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea being potential source regions for shipping emissions. Further efforts to control shipping emissions should be strengthened not only at Qingdao Port but also in surrounding ports.
