Dissimilar laser welding of a CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy to 316 stainless steel

J. P. Oliveira et al.

Summary: In this study, laser welding of rolled CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy to 316 stainless steel was conducted, resulting in defect-free joints. The microstructure of the fusion zone was mainly composed of a single FCC phase with increased hardness. The welded joints exhibited good mechanical properties, with fracture occurring at the fusion zone due to the development of a non-favorable large grain size microstructure.

Unprecedented combination of strength and ductility in laser welded NiCoCr medium entropy alloy joints

Zhongyin Zhu et al.

Summary: CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloys, especially NiCoCr MEA, display exceptional mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures. Research on welding NiCoCr is still in its infancy, but experiments show that laser-welded NiCoCr joints exhibit the best combination of strength and ductility at 300K and 77K.

The effect of Cu and Mn elements on the mechanical properties of single-crystal CoCrFeNi-based high-entropy alloy under nanoindentation

Yuming Qi et al.

Summary: The impact of chemical compositions on the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of single-crystal FCC CoCrFeNi-based high-entropy alloys was investigated through molecular dynamics simulation in nanoindentation. The addition of Cu and Mn elements influences the stacking faults energy and dislocation-mediated deformation. The total number of chemical compositions plays a critical role in the results, showing significant effects on plastic deformation, indentation force and hardness of the high-entropy alloys.

Laser dissimilar welding of CoCrFeMnNi-high entropy alloy and duplex stainless steel

Nana Kwabena Adomako et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit superior mechanical properties and have been used in structural materials in nuclear and aerospace applications. A dissimilar joint between CoCrFeMnNi-HEA and duplex stainless steel (DSS) was created through laser beam welding, resulting in a sound joint with FCC phase in the weld metal. Postweld heat treatment (PWHT) showed a decrease in hardness for the weld metal, HEA, and DSS, with HEA experiencing a more significant reduction. Additionally, a strength of 584 MPa with low ductility was achieved after welding, and applying PWHT resulted in increased ductility with only a marginal reduction in strength. Future studies will focus on using laser beam offset welding to improve the mechanical properties of dissimilar joints.
