Analytical Review of Life-Cycle Environmental Impacts of Carbon Capture and Utilization Technologies

Guillermo Garcia-Garcia et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) is proposed as a sustainable alternative to produce valuable chemicals by reducing global warming impact and depletion of fossil resources. Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a robust methodology used to analyze environmental impacts, showing that CCU generally reduces environmental impacts compared to conventional manufacturing processes, notably global warming/climate change. To achieve environmental improvements, renewable energy must be used, particularly for hydrogen production through water electrolysis.

Plastic recycling in a circular economy; determining environmental performance through an LCA matrix model approach

A. E. Schwarz et al.

Summary: Insights into environmental impacts of recycling and optimal recycling choices for specific plastic polymers are crucial for ensuring a circular economy for plastics. A life cycle assessment 'matrix' model was used to evaluate the environmental performance of 10 recycling technologies for the top 25 produced polymers in Europe, showing varying results depending on the polymer type. The model suggests that recycling the most demanded polymers in Europe could reduce CO2 emissions from plastics significantly.

Life-cycle assessment of an industrial direct air capture process based on temperature-vacuum swing adsorption

Sarah Deutz et al.

Summary: Direct air capture technology can achieve negative emissions, but its benefits depend on the energy source. Large-scale deployment of direct air capture is not limited by material and energy availability, but the production of amines for adsorbents needs to be scaled up. Energy source and efficiency are crucial for achieving negative emissions and low-carbon fuels with direct air capture.

Life cycle environmental impacts of chemical recycling via pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste in comparison with mechanical recycling and energy recovery

Harish Jeswani et al.

Summary: The study compares the environmental impacts of chemical recycling through pyrolysis with other plastics waste management options and virgin plastics production. Results indicate that pyrolysis has lower climate change impact and life cycle energy use, but higher other impacts compared to mechanical recycling, energy recovery, and virgin plastics production.

Plastics in the Earth system

Aron Stubbins et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become a global issue, prompting us to consider plastics as emergent geomaterials never before seen in Earth's history. With high carbon content, plastics can rival natural organic carbon in some ecosystems, prompting geochemists to include plastics in their analyses to expedite understanding of plastics in the Earth system. Furthermore, plastics can serve as global-scale tracers to advance Earth system science.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.

Plastic ingestion as an evolutionary trap: Toward a holistic understanding

Robson G. Santos et al.

Summary: Human activities are altering ecosystems globally, with plastic pollution playing a predominant role. Wildlife ingest plastic due to factors such as the availability of plastics in the environment, an individual's acceptance threshold, and the overlap of cues given by natural foods and plastics, as identified through the evolutionary trap theory.

LaShanda T. J. Korley et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling and polymer upcycling offer solutions to the challenges of plastic waste heterogeneity and property reductions, enabling circularity and reducing energy consumption and environmental impacts. The industrial adoption of these approaches is encouraging and plays a critical role in addressing the fate of plastics and advancing next-generation materials design.

Sustainability footprints of a renewable carbon transition for the petrochemical sector within planetary boundaries

Angel Galan-Martin et al.

Summary: The petrochemical sector is crucial in low-carbon technologies development, but contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. By using renewable carbon pathways, emissions can be reduced, but there is a risk of exceeding biodiversity boundaries. The environmental footprint of decarbonization solutions for hard-to-abate sectors needs to be quantified.
