Switchable resistance conducting-polymer layer for Li-ion battery overcharge protection

E. V. Beletskii et al.

Summary: The novel approach to overcharge protection of Li-ion cells involves using an electrically conductive polymer that changes from a conductive to insulating state, acting as a chemical circuit breaker. This method allows reversible charge-discharge of the cell at 5V overcharge and terminates cell operation before electrolyte decomposition at 6V overcharge, reducing gas evolution by 4 times compared to non-protected cells.
