A novel constitutive modelling approach measured under simulated freeze-thaw cycles for the rock failure

Huimei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational model was developed to analyze rock deformation and failure characteristics under freeze-thaw cycles and loading, considering the impact of confining pressure and material defects. The model successfully reflects the internal mechanism of freeze-thaw damage and selected physical variables, demonstrating adaptability. The model also predicts an evolution curve of total damage, showing the closure, initiation, propagation and coalescence of internal microcracks, as well as rock failure mechanisms.

Mechanical properties of rock samples with a single natural weak plane after freeze-thaw action

Yani Lu et al.

Summary: The study conducted freeze-thaw cycle and compression tests on sandstone specimens with different structural plane angles, revealing a certain regularity in the variation of sandstone strength. The increase of confining pressure and freeze-thaw cycles can affect sandstone strength, while sandstone with different structural plane angles exhibit different failure modes.

Energy dissipation and damage evolution for dynamic fracture of marble subjected to freeze-thaw and multiple level compressive fatigue loading

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fatigue mechanical behaviors of marble under freeze-thaw treatment, showing that fatigue strength and strain energy decrease while irreversible volumetric deformation increases with the number of cycles. The rate of dissipated energy increases as the cyclic loading level grows. A coupling damage variable is proposed to describe rock damage evolution after freeze-thaw treatment and fatigue loading, with a damage evolution model established to fit the experimental data showing two-phase damage accumulation characteristics.

Experimental investigation on rock mechanical properties and infrared radiation characteristics with freeze-thaw cycle treatment

Chun Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution rule of rock strength and infrared radiation characteristics of different rock types subjected to freeze-thaw weathering cycles, analyzing the mechanisms of rock damage and change in AIRT. The results showed that marble has the highest resistance to freeze-thaw processes, while sandstone has the lowest.

Mechanical property deterioration characteristics and a new constitutive model for rocks subjected to freeze-thaw weathering process

Feng Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the stress-strain relationships of rocks subjected to different numbers of freeze-thaw cycles, revealing that with increasing cycles, the rock's strength decreases while strain increases. A new piecewise constitutive model is proposed, based on the characteristics of compaction and post-compaction stages of the stress-strain curve, which proves to be more effective in describing the stress-strain behavior of rocks with freeze-thaw damages compared to the reference model.
