A continuous fracture front tracking algorithm with multi layer tip elements (MuLTipEl) for a plane strain hydraulic fracture

E. V. Dontsov

Summary: This study considers the problem of a plane strain hydraulic fracture propagating in a layered formation. A numerical algorithm is developed based on a fixed mesh approach, which accurately solves the problem by tracking the fracture front location using the concept of fictitious tip stress. The effect of layers is included by varying properties as a function of front location. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and capability of the algorithm in handling multiple thin layers.

Combined micro-proppant and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing in shale gas reservoirs: A review

C. P. Zhang et al.

Summary: SC-CO2 fracturing (SCF) has low proppant-carrying capacity compared to traditional water-based fracturing (WBF), impacting its effectiveness in exploiting deep unconventional gas reservoirs. Micro-proppants with higher carrying capacity show potential for improving proppant concentration in SCF-created fractures. The study emphasizes the importance of fracturing fluid viscosity, flow states, and proppant size in enhancing micro-proppant carrying capacity in SCF.

Adaptive Finite Element-Discrete Element Analysis for the Stress Shadow Effects and Fracture Interaction Behaviours in Three-Dimensional Multistage Hydrofracturing Considering Varying Perforation Cluster Spaces and Fracturing Scenarios of Horizontal Wells

Yongliang Wang et al.

Summary: Optimizing complex fracture networks can improve fracturing effects and enhance production in multistage hydrofracturing technology. Understanding the controlling mechanisms in unconventional tight reservoirs involves addressing issues such as hydro-mechanical coupling and stress shadow effects. Using an adaptive finite element-discrete element method allows for accurate solutions in simulating 3D fracture propagation. The study shows that altering the sequence of perforation clusters in alternate fracturing scenarios can reduce stress shadow effects and improve fracturing efficiency.

Numerical Investigation on Hydraulic Fracturing of Extreme Limited Entry Perforating in Plug-and-Perforation Completion of Shale Oil Reservoir in Changqing Oilfield, China

Fengshou Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent developments in multi-stage hydraulic fracturing for shale oil reservoirs are focusing on shorter cluster spacing and larger number of clusters, with the aim of improving stimulation performance while reducing costs. The study introduces the effective XLE completion method for enhancing perforation cluster efficiency and discusses the impact of various parameters on cluster effectiveness. The research results offer theoretical guidance for optimizing XLE completion in geological reservoirs.
