Process optimization, green chemistry balance and technoeconomic analysis of biodiesel production from castor oil using heterogeneous nanocatalyst

R. Naveenkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, zinc-doped calcium oxide was utilized as a nanocatalyst for biodiesel production from castor oil. Optimal conditions and green chemistry parameters were determined using response surface methodology, leading to sustainable biodiesel yield and green chemistry balance. The results indicate that this approach provides a viable platform for commercial biodiesel production.

Waste to bioplastics: How close are we to sustainable polyhydroxyalkanoates production?

Kasra Khatami et al.

Summary: Increased awareness of environmental sustainability and strict environmental regulations have encouraged the search for novel materials to replace conventional petroleum-derived plastics. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are attractive due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, but challenges remain in production yield and consistency. Bioaugmentation and metabolic engineering are promising approaches to overcome these hurdles in commercial PHA production from waste streams.

Economic perspective of ethanol and biodiesel coproduction from industrial hemp

Mothi Bharath Viswanathan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the economics of producing biofuels from an industrial hemp genotype, finding that increasing the lipid content in hemp can lead to higher biodiesel production and lower production costs. The simulation results showed that hemp with 10% lipids can achieve a comparable biodiesel unit production cost to soybean biodiesel, with the potential for cost reduction with lower hemp feedstock costs. Additionally, industrial hemp is capable of producing more total biofuels per hectare of agricultural land than soybean.

Bulk Drag Predictions of Riparian Arundo donax Stands through UAV-Acquired Multispectral Images

Giuseppe Francesco Cesare Lama et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of riparian vegetation morphology on bulk drag coefficients distribution along an abandoned vegetated drainage channel by integrating reflectance indices and hydrodynamics. The analysis of UAV-acquired multispectral imagery on bulk drag predictions along the vegetated drainage channel was enabled through comparative analysis between NDVI and LAI maps of Arundo donax stands.

Novel Bioplastic from Single Cell Protein as a Potential Packaging Material

Shuvra Singha et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates the production of single cell protein (SCP) from biodegradable waste materials and its potential applications as bioplastic films, with oxygen barrier properties and biodegradability. The SCP-based bioplastic films offer a promising alternative to existing plant/animal protein films and certain synthetic polymers, without the issue of microplastics.
