GPU-based aim point optimization for solar tower power plants

Laurin Oberkirsch et al.

Summary: In this study, optimization of aim point distributions and grouping strategy were implemented in solar tower power plants, combining ant colony optimization meta-heuristic to find suitable aim point distributions within seconds to a minute, with intercepts 1-4% higher than single factor aiming. It has also proven its applicability in clouded environments, reducing spillage by 35% compared to single factor aiming.

Flux-feedback as a fast alternative to control groups of aiming points in molten salt power towers

David Acosta et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel control strategy was proposed and tested in a simulated power plant to improve operational efficiency and prolong the lifespan of subsystems in central tower concentrating solar power plants. The control law manipulated the behavior of heliostats in the solar field, reducing the variables from incident flux to achieve a configuration close to the optimal solution with faster speed and less computational resources.

MDBA: An accurate and efficient method for aiming heliostats

Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new parameterization of heliostat aim-point locations that significantly simplifies the aiming problem, allowing for accurate interpolation of aiming strategy and dynamic prediction of aim-points at different sun positions and values of direct normal irradiance. The new approach enables efficient use of ray-tracing to optimize the aiming strategy and closely match flux distribution to local values of allowable flux on the receiver.
