Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Laith S. Sawaqed et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Application of the HFACS-PV approach for identification of human and organizational factors (HOFs) influencing marine accidents

Serdar Yildiz et al.

Summary: Shipping is a leading mode of transport in the world economy, with maritime safety closely related to effectiveness and efficiency of maritime trade. The complexity of human factors poses a challenge in fully analyzing accidents, and this research aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using the HFACS-PV system for various types of accidents. Results show that the HFACS-PV structure is adaptable for different maritime accidents, allowing for coherent analysis.

Maritime safety: Prevention versus mitigation?

Romanas Puisa et al.

Summary: The study analyzed seven research studies applying formal safety assessment to various types of ships, finding that the belief that accident mitigation is more practical than incident prevention is unwarranted. While the credibility of FSA results is weak, this conclusion remains significant. Additionally, the review revealed a potential bias towards mitigation measures and discussed possible reasons for this.

The Role of the Prefrontal Cortex and Functional Connectivity during Maritime Operations: An fNIRS study

Shiqi Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that neurovascular activation in the right lateral area of the prefrontal cortex changed significantly during watchkeeping and decision-making tasks. Graph-theoretic analysis showed that connectivity density decreased during decision-making but increased during preparation for evasive maneuvers. Network measures were associated with behavioral outcomes, affecting the ability to spot target vessels and perform evasive maneuvers.
