Loess landscapes of Europe-Mapping, geomorphology, and zonal differentiation

F. Lehmkuhl et al.

Summary: The article discusses three main depositional regimes for loess formation in Europe and the influences of geomorphology and paleoenvironment on Late Pleistocene loess deposition and preservation. Criteria for dividing loess regions are proposed, and a new map of aeolian sediments distribution in Europe is presented for paleoenvironmental and archaeological studies.

A chronological and palaeoenvironmental re-evaluation of two loess-palaeosol records in the northern Harz foreland, Germany, based on innovative modelling tools

Christoph Schmidt et al.

Summary: This study re-investigated two LPS profiles in Germany, establishing new quartz OSL and polymineral IRSL chronologies and applying Bayesian age-depth modeling to resolve original age inversions. The reinterpretation of grain-size data through end member modeling analyses provided insights into geomorphic processes and timing. The findings highlight variations in sedimentation rates over time and link certain grain size characteristics to the extent of the ice sheet and changes in wind patterns.

The Sveconorwegian orogeny

Bernard Bingen et al.

Summary: This article reviews the geology and tectonic models of the Sveconorwegian orogeny, proposing an updated geodynamic scenario of a large continental collision starting at around 1065 Ma. It discusses the formation of an orogenic plateau, extensive magmatism, and metamorphic events, pointing towards a shallow asthenosphere under the crust and a retreating delamination of the dense sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The orogenic plateau eventually collapsed around 930 Ma, with extensive erosion removing overburden.

Disentangling Sedimentary Pathways for the Pleniglacial Lower Danube Loess Based on Geochemical Signatures

Stephan Potter et al.

Summary: The study concludes that the Danube alluvium, Carpathian Bending, Eastern Carpathian, glaciofluvial, and Black Sea pathways are the main potential sources of loess sediments in the Lower Danube Basin. The geochemical data suggest that the Danube alluvium pathway is the major trajectory for loess in the region, with contributions from the Carpathian Bending pathway in the northeastern part, and possible minor influences from the Black Sea pathway.

Provenance and paleoenvironmental context of the Late Pleistocene thin aeolian silt mantles in southwestern Poland - A widespread parent material for soils

Jaroslaw Waroszewski et al.

Summary: This study in SW Poland focuses on the provenance and formation of thin loess deposits, indicating a mix of local Sudetic and Scandinavian sources attributed to the Great Odra Valley. Isotopic and mineralogical analyses reveal the origins of the thin loess mantles, with Luminescence ages pointing to formation during and shortly after the Last Glacial Maximum. Anomalies in mineralogy and isotopic composition are connected with influence of Sudetic mountain rivers and locally blowing silt material by katabatic winds.
