The Role of the Central Amygdala in Alcohol Dependence

Marisa Roberto et al.

Summary: Alcohol dependence is characterized by compulsive drug-seeking behavior, loss of control in limiting intake, and withdrawal syndromes. Evidence suggests that synaptic transmission in the central nucleus of the amygdala plays a role in alcohol-related behaviors and neuroadaptive mechanisms. Neuropeptides such as CRF and nociccptin/orphanin FQ affect alcohol-related behaviors and alter alcohol-induced effects on CeA neurotransmission.

Summary: The study explored the effects of different test conditions on behavior and plasma corticosterone responses in male C57BL/6J mice in the elevated plus maze test. It found that experience with other behavioral tests and different physical features of the maze can influence behavior in the test.
