Sex differences in post-traumatic stress disorder in a high adversity cohort of South African adolescents: an examination of depressive symptoms, age, and trauma type as explanatory factors

Lucy V. Hiscox et al.

Summary: This study found that adolescent females in a high adversity-LMIC sample have higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to males, even when controlling for total trauma exposure and co-occurring depressive symptoms. The research also suggests that sex differences in depression are eliminated after controlling for co-occurring post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and age does not have a significant impact on the emergence of sex differences.
