The role of the serotonin transporter in prefrontal cortex glutamatergic signaling following short- and long-access cocaine self-administration

Lucia Caffino et al.

Summary: This study found that in rats lacking SERT, cocaine intake led to changes in the expression of proteins related to glutamate neurotransmission in the prefrontal cortex, with differences observed between subregions and the duration of cocaine exposure.

Time-dependent regulation of perineuronal nets in the cerebellar cortex during abstinence of cocaine-self administration

Aitor Sanchez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Cocaine self-administration results in modifications in PNN that promote synaptic plasticity in the cerebellar cortex. Short-term cocaine abstinence leads to decreased PNN expression, while long-term abstinence results in intensified PNNs, stabilizing drug-induced synaptic changes. Extended access to cocaine self-administration dynamically regulates conditions for plasticity in the cerebellum during abstinence.
